An innovative ICT specialized company, UCube, has emerged as a key player to lead the advanced strategic defense industry. By being finally selected for the national project 'Defense Innovation Company 100', hosted by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) and the Defense Technology Promotion Institute, UCube has proven itself as a leading company that will contribute to strengthening future defense capabilities. This program aims to discover and foster a total of 100 companies from 2022 to 2026 to provide optimized technology for future battlefield environments, and UCube has made its name as one of the 21 companies selected this year.
The core driving force behind UCube's success in this selection is its independently developed 'data link technology for low-altitude small drones'. This innovative technology enables the surprisingly stable transmission and reception of drone control data even in beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) environments over 20km away. Particularly noteworthy is the perfect implementation of the 'Anti-Jamming' function, which is considered an essential survival strategy and a core capability that will determine the outcome of modern warfare. By applying Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology, UCube has secured continuous operational capability by instantly changing or avoiding frequencies despite the enemy's persistent radio jamming attacks. This acts as a decisive factor that not only provides a tactical advantage but also dramatically increases the success rate of operations.
The development of this technology holds strategic significance beyond mere technological advancement. Until now, the domestic small drone market has been exposed to serious security threats such as data leaks and backdoors due to a high reliance on Chinese communication modules. To solve these chronic problems, UCube succeeded in miniaturizing and lightening the core communication module while achieving 100% domestic production. This has eliminated national security vulnerabilities and established a solid foundation for entering the global small drone market. Now, UCube's technology has become a core asset that protects national security, going beyond mere commercial value.
Through its selection for 'Defense Innovation Company 100', UCube will receive powerful support from the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) in the future. It will receive customized support for each growth stage, including technology development (R&D), expert consulting, funding, and export support, in a package worth up to 5 billion Korean Won. This will serve as a strong stepping stone for UCube to leap forward as a powerhouse in the global market.
Kim Jeong-beom, CEO of UCube, stated regarding this selection, "This is a result of UCube's wireless communication technology being officially recognized by the nation as a core capability that will contribute to national security," and expressed his ambition, "Leveraging the full support of the government, we will achieve complete domestic production of small drone communication technology and further emerge as a leading company with overwhelming competitiveness in the global market." UCube's innovation is expected to become a new milestone illuminating the future of South Korea's defense industry.
