In Yabu City, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, a place grappling with the profound woes of an aging agricultural population and labor shortages, an innovative attempt to plant the seeds of hope for future agriculture is beginning. South Korean robot startup THE Robotics is drawing attention as it commences field demonstrations of its 'botbox' robot, designed to solve chronic problems in agricultural settings. Yabu is a mountainous region in Japan where the aging of the agricultural population is particularly severe, making the need for automation of farm work through robots urgent. Designated as a National Strategic Special Zone, Yabu City is actively introducing innovative technologies to solve local problems. In a fiercely competitive POC (Proof of Concept) demonstration project where only 4 out of 30 teams were selected, THE Robotics earned recognition for its technological prowess, being the only South Korean company to be named. The 'botbox' that THE Robotics is showcasing in Yabu City is a follow-type transport robot that innovatively automates the arduous, repetitive transport tasks in field farming. It has already proven its worth in South Korean fruit orchards, contributing to productivity improvements with its easy operation and excellent on-site applicability. Based on this field validation, THE Robotics is confident that the 'botbox' can be immediately deployed in the Japanese rural environment and prove effective. During the intensive demonstration period of approximately two months, THE Robotics aims to advance the 'botbox' technology by actively incorporating vivid feedback from local farmers, and increase agricultural work efficiency by over 20%. Kang Dong-woo, CEO of THE Robotics, expressed his hope that "our transport robot will become a key solution for labor savings for Japanese farms facing aging problems similar to Korea," and stated a strong commitment to "expand robot distribution throughout Japan" using this demonstration as a stepping stone. Attention is drawn to whether the 'botbox' will breathe new vitality into Yabu City's agriculture and, furthermore, bring about positive changes across Japanese agriculture.
