KakaoPay Unveils 'MCP Toolkit' for AI Agent Payment Integration

Kakao Pay has opened new horizons to revolutionize the payment experience in the era of artificial intelligence (AI). By unveiling 'Payment MCP (Model Context Protocol)' and 'Agent Toolkit,' core technologies for a future where users can easily make payments through natural language conversations, Kakao Pay has declared the era of payment AI. First, Payment MCP is a standard protocol that securely and efficiently links AI agents with Kakao Pay's vast payment system APIs. Given that millions of transactions occur daily, Kakao Pay designed this protocol to prioritize security and stability, enabling reliable communication between AI and external systems. It effectively acts as a robust bridge, helping AI models utilize the functions of external tools in a consistent manner. Alongside this, the unveiled Agent Toolkit helps developers easily integrate payment functions into AI chatbots. Provided as a tool, it allows for the implementation of seven core payment API functions—such as payment testing, preparation, approval, cancellation, and status inquiry—simply through natural language commands like 'create a payment link for a 5,000 won coffee.' This maximizes development convenience and delivers an innovative payment experience to users. This technology operates through the organic combination of AI agent-MCP-Kakao Pay Open API and flexibly supports various widely used AI frameworks such as LangChain, Vercel AI SDK, and OpenAI SDK. Through a demonstration, Kakao Pay showcased an AI agent responding in real-time to natural language requests such as 'create a payment link' or 'cancel payment,' processing the entire flow from payment link generation to status inquiry and cancellation, thereby presenting a blueprint for future payments. Kakao Pay defined this unveiling as 'the first step in preparing for the era of payment AI' and expressed its ambition to 'lead the development of innovative technologies in the AI era based on technical stability and user trust.' It is expected that an intuitive and convenient AI-based payment experience will soon become a part of our daily lives.
