Kakao Mobility garnered attention at 'Google I/O 2024', held on May 20 (local time), by showcasing a successful case of hybrid AI that combines on-device AI and cloud AI in its integrated transportation app 'Kakao T'. At the largest technology conference where developers from around the world gather, they presented an innovative approach using Google's AI model 'Gemini Nano'.
The core of the announcement made that day was the 'AI Address Auto-Paste' feature for the 'Kakao T Quick & Delivery' service. Kakao Mobility has been providing this feature since February, using a cloud AI method based on 'Gemini 2.0 Flash'. As a result, within one month of the service launch, it demonstrated excellent usability improvement effects, such as reducing the order completion time by 24% and improving the order completion rate for new users by 13.39%p.
Furthermore, Kakao Mobility completed the implementation of hybrid AI by additionally integrating 'Gemini Nano', Google's on-device AI model. This is expected to contribute to building a more stable and flexible service environment by minimizing response latency and reducing network dependency. It is particularly significant that a platform company, not a device manufacturer, successfully applied on-device AI to an actual service, an implementation that was previously difficult in mobile environments with limited computational resources.
Kakao Mobility plans to officially apply the 'AI Address Auto-Paste' feature in a hybrid manner in the second half of this year. On Android devices, they plan to implement on-device AI using 'Gemini Nano', and on iOS, they will utilize their self-developed machine learning model.
Yoo Wi-seok, Head of Client Development at Kakao Mobility, stated, "This Google I/O presentation is highly significant as it lays the foundation for proactively combining on-device AI and cloud AI and applying them to platform services." He added that they will continue to enhance the convenience and experience of Kakao T users by introducing various AI technologies in the future. Kakao Mobility plans to continue enhancing services, such as recommending transportation options and destinations using its own AI technology, thereby strengthening the overall usability of Kakao T.
