Zavis & Villains, which operates the tax agency service 'Samjjamjjam', is officially entering the insurtech market by acquiring Microprotect, an insurtech startup based on actual expense insurance. This acquisition is a strategic move to maximize synergy by expanding beyond tax refunds to hospital bill refund services, under the shared business philosophy of 'finding customers' hidden money'.
Microprotect, an insurtech company founded in 2019, rose to prominence in the unclaimed insurance refund market by launching 'Returns', a proxy claim service for actual expense insurance, in 2021. Notably, since starting its partnership with Samjjamjjam in 2024, it has shown explosive growth, with sales surging over 300% compared to the previous year. The domestic insurance market is worth approximately 250 trillion won, and the annual unclaimed actual expense insurance payouts alone amount to 270 billion won, indicating significant potential. It is understood that about 20 million actual expense insurance subscribers, which accounts for approximately 60% of all subscribers, have no claim experience whatsoever.
Through this acquisition, Samjjamjjam customers will be able to access tax and hospital bill refunds all at once through a single app. Furthermore, the goal is to evolve into a 'life-centric economic platform' by providing personalized insurance diagnosis and recommendation services. Kim Beom-seop, CEO of Zavis & Villains, noted that Microprotect's business structure is similar to Samjjamjjam's, emphasizing the move towards an integrated platform that offers convenience and benefits to customers' daily lives. Microprotect will be incorporated as a subsidiary of Samjjamjjam and plans to address the problems it aimed to solve in the insurance industry on a larger scale.
