On the 27th, battery technology company ZAIN ENERGY announced the successful development of an innovative lithium solid-state battery, drawing significant attention from the industry by successfully addressing both safety and performance. The recently unveiled 5Ah-class battery surpasses the limitations of existing lithium-ion batteries, showcasing the essence of next-generation technology. Above all, the greatest strength of ZAIN ENERGY's lithium solid-state battery is its unparalleled safety. Even when a short circuit occurred during an extreme 'nail penetration test', no gas emission, ignition, or combustion phenomena whatsoever were observed. This is thanks to the excellent properties of the solid electrolyte, which successfully suppresses the fatal thermal runaway phenomenon that occurs during internal short circuits. What's even more surprising is that even with physical damage, the battery cell's Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) remained stable for over 24 hours, and charging/discharging functions operated normally, proving durability and reliability that overwhelm existing lithium-ion batteries. In terms of performance, it boasts equivalence or even superiority to existing products. It demonstrates excellent performance in key indicators such as low internal resistance, long charge/discharge cycle life, and superior fast charge/discharge characteristics, and is evaluated to have achieved a level of completeness that allows immediate application in all markets requiring high safety, including electric vehicles (EVs), energy storage systems (ESS), and wearable devices. Innovation in production is also noteworthy. ZAIN ENERGY adopted an 'in-situ thermopolymerized polymer solid electrolyte', allowing the existing lithium-ion battery manufacturing process to be used as is, thereby dramatically reducing production costs. This is the secret to securing overwhelming price competitiveness compared to all-solid-state batteries based on sulfide or oxide electrolytes. Lee Ju-hyun, CEO of ZAIN ENERGY, emphasized that "securing fire safety and high performance are key objectives in solid-state battery development," and expressed ambition that the company's polymer electrolyte-based solid-state battery will play a crucial role in changing the landscape of the future EV, ESS, and wearable battery markets. Beyond the currently developed 5Ah-class cells, they are also accelerating the development of large 50-100Ah-class cells, and plan to emerge as a leader in the solid-state battery market, which is projected to grow to approximately 15 trillion won by 2035.
