The way Koreans search for jobs is rapidly changing, prioritizing 'proximity' and 'speed' as their top values. There's a trend of preferring neighborhood jobs within walking distance over workplaces several subway stops away, and expecting quick matches that finish in 30 minutes rather than interviews lasting over an hour. Data released by the local job search service Daangn Alba over the past year (May 16, 2024 - May 15, 2025) clearly shows these changes in numbers.
**Cities Searching for the Closest Jobs: Gwangju Metropolitan City, and Gangbuk-gu, Seoul**
The distance where the most job applications were concentrated was within 1-2 kilometers. 15.6% of all applications were concentrated within this range, highlighting a strong desire to find nearby jobs that don't go beyond one's daily living radius. In the regional 'closest job competition,' Gwangju Metropolitan City took an overwhelming first place. Gwangju is the city where job matching occurs at the shortest average distance nationwide, at 6.8 kilometers. Incheon Metropolitan City and Daegu Metropolitan City jointly ranked second at 7.0 kilometers.
Delving deeper, interesting patterns are found even within major cities. Gangbuk-gu, Seoul recorded the shortest average distance nationwide at 4.5 kilometers, followed by Bupyeong-gu, Incheon (4.6 kilometers), and Michuhol-gu (4.8 kilometers). This suggests that within large cities, areas with a relatively smaller living radius tend to have a stronger inclination to seek jobs closer to home.
**Remarkable Speed: 43.3% of Matches Within 30 Minutes**
Just as important as distance is 'matching speed.' Daangn Alba's 'Neighbor Alba' service showed remarkable results, with 43.3% of confirmed hirings being matched within 30 minutes. This is an overwhelming figure even when compared to the second highest, matches within 30 minutes to 1 hour (8.6%). It proves that job postings containing phrases like "Urgently seeking" or "Those who can come immediately" are indeed leading to rapid hires.
This phenomenon is underpinned by a complex interplay of technological and social factors: nearby jobs that reduce the burden on job seekers, and instant communication through chat functions that enable quick decision-making. A Daangn Alba official stated that a culture of neighbors exchanging large and small favors is spreading, based on the 'hyperlocal' trend, and they plan to further strengthen their local job connection services through this.
In conclusion, modern job seekers are looking for jobs 'closer and faster,' and new job search methods based on local communities are establishing themselves as a key driving force behind these changes.
