Chairperson Chung Hyun-kyung to Usher in ₩300 Trillion K-Culture Era by Boosting K-Pop Copyrights
Musicow Chairman Jung Hyun-kyung recently presented an innovative vision for the future of the K-content industry at a seminar held at the National Assembly in Yeouido. She emphasized that the securitization of music copyrights could be a key strategy for achieving a "K-Content 300 Trillion Won" market and revitalizing the "K-Digital Asset" market. At this seminar, co-hosted by Democratic Party of Korea lawmakers Kim Kyo-heung, Min Byung-deok, and Lim Oh-kyung, strategies for utilizing KRW stablecoins based on K-content were discussed in depth. Experts from various fields, including Musicow Chairman Jung, Dunamu Upbit, film director Yang Woo-suk, and a Bithumb research fellow, addressed measures to strengthen the competitiveness of Korea's cultural industry through the institutionalization of digital assets and the convergence with K-content. Chairman Jung Hyun-kyung gave a presentation on the topic of 'K-Culture 300 Trillion Won, KRW Stablecoin Activation: Music Copyrights as a Use Case to Catch Two Birds with One Stone', explaining that K-POP music securities could become an 'anchor asset' to promote the use of KRW stablecoins. She emphasized that just as important as issuing KRW stablecoins is presenting 'incentives that make people want to use them'. While existing financial products have limitations in attracting foreigners into the domestic financial ecosystem, she anticipated that K-POP music securities, which are highly attractive to the global K-POP fandom, would play a crucial role in drawing them into Korea's digital financial ecosystem and, furthermore, encouraging access to other Korean financial products. Chairman Jung stated that the combination of content and digital finance would go beyond simply adding the value of two industries to create a market of new opportunities. According to a report by the Korea Intellectual Property Institute, if all domestic music copyrights were securitized, they are estimated to hold a market value of up to 22 trillion won. This figure is approximately 10 times the annual export value of Korea's music industry, and Chairman Jung explained that this 22 trillion won market could be a significant means to usher in the "K-Culture 300 Trillion Won" era. Chairman Jung emphasized that if K-content IPs such as webtoons and dramas, beyond K-POP copyrights which are currently difficult for foreigners to access, were digitized and distributed globally, foreign capital would flow into the domestic creative ecosystem, creating a virtuous cycle where more abundant creative works are born and the cultural industry grows. She appealed for support for the infinite potential of K-content, stating, "If K-POP has captured the hearts of people worldwide until now, I ask for much interest and support so that we can now create an even larger market through the financialization of fan engagement."
